The Most Widely Known Secret People Are Writing On $1 Bills

It’s today’s message in a bottle. Will recipients take heed?
And some people are even using markers*.

MOVEON Pickets Erik Paulsen's Office, AGAIN

http://prairiehomeliving.blogspot.com/2011/08/moveon-pickets-erik-paulsens-office.html

In the shadow of  local banks, Target and a local veggie stand, Moveon volunteers, for the second time in several weeks, took the time to picket Erik Paulsen's office.

Where was the local media? Eden Prairie News, Eden Prairie Sun?  We didn't see them.

Why is Paulsen a target?

He is a member of ALEC and the Chamber of Commerce, two organizations that falsely claim to be non-partisan, financially supporting almost exclusively Republicans. Rep. Paulsen has avoided contact with progressive members of his district in the past, refusing to meet and holding “public” meetings only in the most remote areas of the district where the fewest live according to US Uncut at this URL:

Rep Erik Paulsen tied to controversial corporate group ALEC-

http://minnesotaindependent.com/?p=85071

Paulsen's financial backers, a who's who of corporations, is surely a reflection on Paulsen's abysmal voting record. Vote Smart reflects his illogical, pro-life/anti-life, but pro-business positions.

Keep the baby, but make sure his or her food isn't safe, definitely don't consider education funding so he or she can go to a public school, make it harder to get a college education and by all means make his or her working standards and pay like those of a 3rd world country..

The list doesn't end here, but you get the idea..

NEXT MOVEON ACTIVITY - 8/10

Dear MoveOn member,
How angry are you at Congress right now? Tea partiers hijacked the debt ceiling deal—threatening to crash our economy to protect tax breaks for the wealthiest 1%—and most Democrats caved to their demands.1
With Congress home for the summer starting next week, this is our opportunity to show how angry we are. The media and Washington insiders will be watching closely to see how voters are responding to the debt deal. This is the perfect time for us to turn up the heat, and turn the focus to what it will take to rebuild the American Dream.
We need to show Congress that we're sick of the cuts, and we want them to concentrate on creating jobs. That's why we're joining with partners in the American Dream movement to hold "Jobs Not Cuts" events at district offices nationwide.
We'll gather at congressional offices and turn our anger into energy for real solutions on jobs. But before we can, we need someone to volunteer to host an event at your local congressional office. Can you host an event on August 10 in Saint Paul? It's really easy and we'll provide everything you need.
Reuters reported yesterday, "Thousands of Tea Party movement activists are expected to descend this month on town hall meetings across key battleground states as part of an intensifying campaign ahead of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections."2 If we want to shift the battle lines to the left and work for real progress we need to be bigger, louder, and stronger.
If you've never hosted an event before, it's a simple and fun way to have a powerful impact. Just pick a location—we'll give you suggestions on how—and invite your friends. We'll make sure you have all the tips and tools you'll need to organize the event, and we'll invite other MoveOn members in your area to come. But first we need someone to host. Can you do it?
Thanks for all you do.

DO IT NOW DOSSIER: CALL MN ALEC MEMBERS NOW !!

 http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=230317733668739

MY previous post on call out ALEC

This is the ALEC list we were talking about at last night's
council meeting with Common Cause's state director.  I've also included the
names and phones at the end.

RECOMMENDED ACTION:  Call those on the list today and tomorrow.  They'll be
back by the weekend, some earlier.  Please send this out to all Minnesota
MoveOn members encouraging them to call and ask where they are this week.
Encourage Rebuild The Dream partners to also participate.  A suggested
script below:

"Hi, I'm hoping to meet [Representative/Senator] [Last Name] during our
state recess this week.  What events will she be at?"

Those who inform callers they are out of state, at a "task force" meeting,
in New Orleans, or at the American Legislative Exchange Council meeting
should:
1.  Email responses to Common Cause mdean@commoncause.org
2.  You can also post the results publicly via twitter as:  @CommonCauseMN
[Rep./Sen. [Name] staff confirmed in New Orleans] #ALECexposed

Common Cause will then file lawsuits against the legislators for violating
campaign finance rules.

NOTES:
Members and staff rarely refer to it as ALEC, chosing instead to make it
sound official with the "American" and other big words.  If you ask
specially about ALEC, the likely response is "I'm not aware of what that
is." followed by misinformation about what the legislator is actually doing,
so avoid saying ALEC during personal calls or visits.

Common Cause has a nearly complete list of Minnesota legislators here:

Angry Constituents Converge on Rep Erik Paulsen’s Office

http://www.theuptake.org/2011/07/27/angry-constituents-converge-on-rep-erik-paulsens-office/

An angry, sometimes hostile crowd of about 75 of Congressman Erik Paulsen’s constituents gathered at his Eden Prairie office to express serious concern over his support of drastic budget cuts proposed by the House Republicans.
The overflow crowd was a broad cross section of voters from his district representing a range of ages. There were some supporters, but most expressed extreme displeasure with the way Paulsen and the political parties are facing the crisis.
One constituent saw the meeting as a microcosm of what is happening in Washington.
“It’s kind of hard to have a productive dialog or conversation in a more confrontational environment … And I think that part of the thing is , we’re kind of seeing this in Congress right now. Because a lot of people aren’t willing to even listen to other points of views even though they know we have to meet some kind of kind of compromise. But that’s kind of where we’re at. And I think what we have to do is find some way around that so that we can work together.
Representative Paulsen was not present for the meeting, instead sending a staffer to talk to the crowd. The UpTake was not allowed to tape the what happened but we were allowed to stay and talked to people after the meeting.
“People asked a bunch of questions and we didn’t get much for answers” said one attendee after the meeting.
Several noted Paulsen’s staff member was new (he has been with Paulsen only since January) and didn’t have many answers. The staff member said he didn’t know what ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) was even though Paulsen is known to be associated with it. ALEC is notorious for writing many right-wing bills that have been passed in state legislatures in a cookie cutter fashion.
Some were upset that Paulsen held a tele-town hall meeting right while President Obama was speaking Monday night, trying to draw them away from the TV set to talk in an environment where Paulsen can control the conversation, yet Paulsen was not willing to show up today to face the angry crowd.
“It’s always interesting that we never seem to be able to talk to Representative Paulsen. He’s always gone or doing something else and yet we’re all his constituents,” said one of the attendees. “He chooses not to be available and this is time for him to hear what our views are and our concerns and it’s really becoming a tragic time in our country’s history and he’s part of that.”
When the anger subsided a bit, most were pleading for balanced, non-ideological solutions including restore more tax fairness with increased upper income taxes, stopping many of the federal studies plus balanced budget cuts including the Wars and subsidies to a variety of businesses. The threats to Social Security and Medicare were a major part of the source of anger.
“It’s deplorable what our country is right now”, said one man after the meeting. ” We’re being controlled by a fringe element of a political party. It’s absolutely disgusting and we’re going to go down the tubes here economically very shortly if that rest of that party continues to kow-tow to that minority.”
Others missed their former Republican representative Jim Ramstad. “I mean Ramstad was a moderate and I don’t think he would have supported half the stuff that this guy Paulsen does. I was a Republican all my life until Bush. When Bush came along I cant’… my bumper sticker says ‘Too poor to be a Republican. Too smart to be a Democrat’ And so I joined the coffee party.”
This meeting was organized by MoveOn.org in cooperation with a number of other volunteer groups and was part of a nation-wide series of meetings on this day at all Congressional Offices.

US debt crisis: US House passes debt bill

http://crisisboom.com/2011/08/01/us-debt-crisis-us-house-passes-debt-bill/#more-8219

As the House of Representatives passed a last minute bill to raise the US borrowing limit while cutting spending by $2.4 trillion, Left-wingers felt betrayed by the White House, saying the price paid to win Republican support had been much too high.
The legislation is due to be approved by the Senate on Tuesday, just hours before the US was due default on its obligations for the first time in its history.
It was approved by 269 votes to 161 votes as both discontented liberals and Tea Party Republicans who wanted even more spending cuts voted against.
Representative Emanuel Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat, said: “This deal is a sugar-coated Satan sandwich. If you lift the bun, you will not like what you see.”
Another, Cedric Richmond from New Orleans, said he feared it would have a “devastating impact” on working and middle class families, whom he said would bear the brunt of the cuts.
The agreement reached by the White House and party leaders in the House and Senate during tense talks over the weekend will allow Mr Obama to borrow the same amount, $2.4 trillion, to allow the government to meet its debt obligations into 2013.
But it came with considerable strings attached to cut the ballooning $14.3 trillion national debt.
About $1 trillion will be cut immediately from government spending, with a further $1.4 trillion to be agreed by the end of the year.
Liberals who once lionized Mr Obama were enraged that the White House failed to twist Republicans’ arms in Congress and include revenue increases in the deal, through closing tax loopholes for oil companies and removing various tax deductions that benefit the wealthy. The savings are made up entirely of spending cuts, though conservatives have had to swallow unwanted savings on the military.
The left-leaning grassroots organisation MoveOn described the deal as “grotesquely immoral”.
“Our members are wondering, ‘What in God’s name is going on in D.C.?’” said Justin Ruben, executive director of the group, which claims five million members. “The country needs jobs, and Washington is debating what vital programme needs to be cut.”" Michael Tomasky, a leading liberal commentator, wrote: “This is the lowest moment of Obama’s presidency.”
While George W Bush wrecked the country “through rank incompetence”, Mr Obama “is simply handing the Republicans the keys to the house and saying ‘take what you want’,” he said in the Daily Beast.
In the New Republic, Jonathan Chait said: “There’s a limit to how much faith one can place in a man who has so badly misjudged his political opponents time and time again.”
Robert Borosage, co-director of the Campaign for American Future, a liberal think tank, accused Mr Obama of yielding to “the Tea Party terrorists – the extremist faction willing to hold the economy hostage to get their way”.
The cuts would not improve the slow recovery, which would in turn affect Mr Obama’s prospects of a second term, he claimed.
Figures revealed yesterday showed that US manufacturing grew at its slowest pace in two years in July as new orders contracted.
“I think he is in increasing danger. The whole argument against him that he has been there four years and there are no jobs, that he has failed, will be an increasingly strong argument,” said Mr Borosage.
Without a major push to create jobs, the alliance of young voters, African Americans , Latinos and single women that elected Mr Obama in 2008 may well not turn out to vote next time, he added.
“Right now, his base is all he has left from 2008. The independents and working-class Democrats have begun to flee,” said Ed Morrissey on the Hot Air blog. “This deal won’t bring those voters back, and his source of organization and funding may largely give up on him.”
The White House defended the deal, saying it was “not the case that Democrats “got nothing”.
“We think the president’s leadership has been essential to this process,” said Jay Carney, the White House press secretary.

Where to find your District Rep the easy way!

Protest ALEC member Erik Paulsen (r-mn) tomorrow !

MEDIA ADVISORY FOR                             CONTACT: Patrick Murphy–612-333-0144
Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Minnesota Residents mobilize to stop Republicans from causing America to default
Participants to protest at ALEC & Chamber of Commerce member Rep. Paulsen’s office.

Why?  Rep. Erik Paulsen is a member of ALEC and the Chamber of Commerce, two organizations that falsely claim to be non-partisan, financially supporting almost exclusively Republicans.  Rep. Paulsen has avoided contact with progressive members of his district in the past, refusing to meet and holding “public” meetings only in the most remote areas of the district where the fewest live.

MoveOn.org is coordinating with other local organizations to demand Paulsen not behave like a corporate puppet, but instead represent the 98% of Minnesotans and Americans who need a realistic solution to the Debt Ceiling problem.  The tiny portion who have financed his past elections along with Speaker of the House John Boehner support their current stubborn stance that millionaires and huge corporations pay not a penny more instead of their fair share after decades of tax decreases, subsidies, and bailouts.

We hope to have at least 1 member from most of the 70 national and local Rebuild the Dream partners in addition to local MoveOn.org members and concerned citizens of Paulsen’s district.  This is part of national day of action with members visiting Congressional offices around the country.

Republicans facing backlash on Medicare at local town hall events

town-hall-sign
Want to pile on the backlash Republicans are feeling at town hall events for their vote to privatize and slash Medicare? MoveOn has created a page where members of the Daily Kos community can search for Republican town hall events near them, and RSVP to attend. The number of events on the list is growing, so keep checking back to see if there are any near you.

* * * *
Remember those town hall events in August of 2009 where tea party activists created extremely hostile atmospheres, scaring the bejesus out of Democratic members of Congress on health reform? Well, after voting to privatize and slash Medicare, there are stirrings of a similar backlash against Republicans in Congress.
Paul Ryan has been booed:
Pennsylvania Freshman Lou Barletta is having a rough time:
At Barletta’s town hall, there were indications that the spending votes could become the defining debate for his first term in Congress. Early in the meeting, a man critical of the tax cuts in Ryan’s plan had to be escorted from the smokey, faded banquet hall by police. A woman interrupted the congressman’s presentation several times to question or criticize him. One retired veteran repeatedly demanded to know why Barletta had voted to cut veteran’s benefits, despite his repeated insistence that he hadn’t taken any such vote.
Charlie Bass in New Hampshire, too:
Rep. Charlie Bass knew he was in for a rough night. The first question out of the gate during his Wednesday town hall in Hillsborough, NH was about his vote for Paul Ryan's budget. And the second. And the third and the fourth, fifth and sixth questions.
And Bob Dold in Illinois:
But Dold couldn’t even get to the end of the presentation before audience members began peppering him with questions about the Ryan budget, named after House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, a Republican from Wisconsin. It began with audience members telling Dold they don’t believe chopping 10 percentage points off the highest corporate tax rate will create jobs. A handful of people in the audience identified themselves as business owners and accountants who said their effective corporate income tax rate is already lower than the lowest rates proposed in the Ryan plan. They pointed to companies such as GE that pay almost no taxes despite billions in profits as evidence.
In Wisconsin, freshman Sean Duffy got so flustered he told dissenters they could have their own town hall:
CONSTITUENT: This is about fraud and abuse. You see these things happen all over the country. They’re talking about money into Medicare fraud enforcement. 60 minutes did a huge story, billions into Medicare fraud annually. DUFFY: Let me tell you what. When you have your town hall you can stand up and give your presentation.
Here's the video of Duffy:
Overall, House Republicans are spooked enough that they are regrouping to try and come up with new strategies tomorrow:
Anxiety is rising among some Republicans over the party’s embrace of a plan to overhaul Medicare, with GOP lawmakers already starting to face tough questions on the issue at town hall meetings back in their districts. House leaders have scheduled a Tuesday conference call in which members are expected in part to discuss strategies for defending the vote they took this month on a budget that would transform the popular entitlement program as part of a plan to cut trillions in federal spending.
As Republicans are trying to regroup, let's pile on. Go check out the page MoveOn created where members of the Daily Kos community can search for Republican town hall events near them, and RSVP to attend. If there are no events near you yet, conduct a search wider than 30 miles and keep checking back in as the list of events grows.
